How to calculate areas

http://www.mathsisfun.com/area.html

Decimal inches to inches

These are advanced calculations which I use after working out on "feet and inches" on a calculator.

Online Circles Calculator

Online calculator

I have recently been working out areas before I purchase some wood, I found this site very helpful (if a little confusing with so many conversions).

- this is a calculator which tells you the length of a squares side if you know the diagonal - clever!

And lots of other calculators here

Study Resources

Each boat building project has access to its own wiki pages where participants can upload their own text and images.

This allows individuals to read through and add to the knowledgebase.

Plagiarism Checker

Plagiarism is when you copy someone's work and do not make it clear that you have copied. Generally Plagiarism is regarded as cheating.

However, if you make it clear exactly where you have researched any information then it is not plagiarism as you are not claiming to be the original producer of the work.

Everyone is influenced by the information around them but it is best to have more than one influence, more than one piece of research so that you can truely understand the context of the research -yes boats float, but why do they float? - dig deeper to find your own "Eureka moment".

If you can understand the area of study you will be able to outline the study subject in your own words, your work might say all the same facts as the research you have found, but if you say it in your own words and show where your research came from, then everyone can see what you have learned.

There is a skill to being able to research a study subject fully (and there are many jobs in Research), you will get credit for showing your process of research and remember all new invention relies upon good research.

So when you post information to this site please show where you researched it from. If it was Wikipedia put in the link with a note, even if it was your Uncle Fred tell us, be open about who created the work.

At the end of the day it is up to the student to learn, I can not live your life for you. Tests and exams can check if a student actually know what they appear to know - if you cheat you are only cheating yourself as schools, education and training are your precious opportunity to speak up and say "I don't understand - can you explain that again". I am here to help - Alex Oct 2011
